The unique challenges of legal IT

The working environments of those operating within the legal profession are set to change in coming years, following the implementation of the Legal Services Act. This piece of legislation, first proposed in 2007, is set to allow the operation of so-called "mixed practices", offering financial, legal and other advice. These alternative business structures could have their base within other types of business, like retailers and insurance firms.

For solicitors, the challenge is to demonstrate to the business world and the public that they're still the place to turn for legal counsel. To achieve this, firms are continuing to invest in gaining the most efficient output possible from their fee-earning lawyers. For IT departments, this means empowering those working remotely so that every hour worked can be billed to clients.
